Limit increase

Effective January 29, 2018, the annual maximum SPP contribution was raised to $6,000. This applies to the 2017 tax year. The maximum contribution is now indexed to the Year's Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) and will change January 1 each year. SPP contributions are subject to RRSP contribution rules.

This increase allows members to make their SPP account a more significant part of their overall retirement strategy. For example, with the new contribution limit and the Plan's historic average rate of return of 8%, a member who is eligible to contribute for the next 25 years could potentially realize about $456,000 at retirement.Try our wealth calculator to see the impact this change will have for your retirement savings.

Key benefits

It is important to note that the other key benefits for members do not change. The Plan is:

  • Voluntary - There's no obligation to contribute. It's up to you, always.
  • Flexible - You can pay what you want (up to the new maximum), when you want.
  • Portable - It's your plan. You take it with you wherever you go.
  • Professionally managed.

Please note that SPP contributions are subject to RRSP contribution rules.
